The Mobile DJs Guide To After Dark

Mastermix Label Manager Richard Lee explains how creating & offering a new concept can help DJs to navigate through that awkward ‘can you play a bit longer’ conversation…

We’ve all performed at events where the last note of the last song ends and is followed by a chorus of “More…More…More” by some of the guests…usually slightly worse from the effects of alcohol! DJ’s are often under-valued and being asked to play beyond an agreed time can be an awkward situation to be in. As professional DJs we are expected to be flexible and will often play on for a little while longer than has been agreed…but where does it end?

10 Great End Of Night Songs

Mastermix Label Manager Richard Lee gives us an overview of just a few of the songs he’s used to end his events on a high!

  • Take That – Greatest Day: A favourite for many wedding events and still a big end of night tune. Brilliantly written & performed it is worthy of its place in the chart.
  • Frank Sinatra – Theme From ‘New York, New York: There is no escaping that this is up there as the essential closing tune. It’s hard to imagine anyone not dancing to this and though many would argue it is too predictable it is the audiences that count…and they love it!
  • Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’: Originally released in 1981 this track had a revival thanks to its inclusion on X-Factor which led to a new market embracing the song and making it a DJ favourite to round off a night.
  • Queen – Don’t Stop Me Now: That intro! That verse! That chorus…and oh that ending! Perfection!
  • Simple Minds – Alive & Kicking: Sometimes you just have to play something that really stirs the soul and this one does it every time. Slow start, gently building to the chorus before that iconic ending that has everyone singing along.
  • Michael Jackson – Man In The Mirror: I have used this track time and again and each time it hits the spot. It’s elegant and delivers a touch of class to the end of the night.
  • Madness – It Must Be Love: The nations favourite band created a gem when they recorded this track in 1981. It appeals to all ages and never fails to hit the mark!
  • Lionel Richie – All Night Long (All Night): I love to play this when the mood of the night dictates that the last track should be slower than my main set but not a ballad. Classy track that appeals to all ages…timeless!
  • Big Bad Voodoo vs. Strictly Come Dancing – I Wanna Be Like You: Disney classic with a twist! A Latino big band version with added percussion from the TV show theme courtesy of Mastermix. A fun way to end the night. It’s a party tune, a classic sing-a-long and played at the right event can create a unique ending leaving guests on a high.
  • Lumineers – Oh-Hey: Perfect example of how a modern track can end a night off in style! Released in 2012 but still relevant to this day. Wonderful track!

Where possible in this article, I’ve linked to the DJ Beats version of the track, so you can mix seamlessly into your final track without having to focus too much on your decks and your attention can be on your audience!
