Mastermix Label Manager Richard Lee takes a look at the cooler side of dance…

As DJs we are expected to keep up with current music trends and one in particular really has captured my interest…Tropical House! If someone had told me a few years ago that I would be playing cool dance music I would have laughed in their face but that’s exactly what has happened. I don’t specialise in it, nor do I play it all night, but I now almost always include it as part of my DJ sets.

Tropical House is a sub-genre of Deep House with elements of Balearic vibes and even a hint of Dancehall. Tropical House has been around for a long time but it’s only in the last few years that it has come to fruition as a mainstream dance music style thanks to pioneering artists including Kygo, Lost Frequencies, Robin Schulz, Seeb & Klingande. Unlike Deep House, that has a darker sound, Tropical House has a lighter, relaxed feel to it. Traditionally the tracks were produced slower than Deep House with bpm ranges being around 110 – 115 but as the genre became more popular those bpm ranges have widened to between 105 – 130 bpm.

There is something about the style of music that fits perfectly for weddings & elegant parties. I love the fact that it’s cool & classy and offers a stylish alternative to the usual songs that I hear played at these type of events. It can be used as part of an early evening set or in your main set to compliment other dance tracks. I love to use Tropical House tracks for Cocktails & during Dinner service and use tracks like these that fall into in the 100 – 115 bpm range:

By carefully mixing these tracks with other pop & dance hits with similar BPM ranges, you can create exciting sets for each part of an event. As an example of the type of tracks that work with the Tropical House examples listed above here are a few that I like to play to complement:

You can even add some contemporary classics like:

‘Ain’t Nobody’ was created as a Tropical House track by producer Felix Jaehn and allows the original to be an option when playing this style of music. By using the beats from a relevant track you can add elements of these classics into the mix to create innovate sets…better still use the DJ Beats versions and use the beats that have been specially created to make things even easier.

You probably know more Tropical House tracks than you first thought as many of the biggest hits of recent years have been from this music genre and often feature in many DJs main party sets:

Tropical House also throws up some brilliant dance covers that I find are always well-received by a wide age group. Some examples of tracks I often play include:

You may also be surprised to hear that some mainstream pop artists have even crossed-over and had huge Tropical House hits:

and there are many artists who are including Tropical House remixes among the versions of their song that are readily available:

And here’s a few other Tropical House bangers should you really wish to indulge yourself further:

What I really like about Tropical House is that it works alongside so many other genres and allows you to be creative with your song selection. Here are a few tracks that I like to add to my set when playing Tropical House tracks:

Tropical House is a genre of music that shows no sign of relenting and is the perfect soundtrack to a Summer wedding & beyond. Take the time to play a few tracks and who knows, it might be you who gets bitten by the Tropical House bug in the same way I did.
